You won’t believe how simple and FREE creating an authors website can be!

In the past, an author’s personal website was the holy grail of finding information on our most beloved writers and storytellers. From book tours to correct reading order, to a mailing address where you could send fanatical letters and wail about the death of your favorite characters. Like a brick house we built with our bare hands, they were our personal spaces, our platforms through which we reached our readers. But, with the rise of blogging and social media, the authors website is slowly fading into antiquity. Or is it? Times are constantly changing and with it comes a flux of new technology and social platforms that overwrite the old. If you’re a millennial like me you no doubt witnessed the death of MySpace and the rise of Facebook and Twitter. But, who’s to say that in ten years these popular sites will still be around? Having a Facebook “like” page and a booming twitter account are fine, but in the case that Facebook nosedives at any time in the future, having your own platform that’s controlled solely by you may be your only saving grace. I can already hear you screaming at me, “But websites are expensive! I can’t afford that!” and “I don’t know how to code a website! I can’t be in control of something I know nothing about!” Relax friends and colleagues, I’m here to provide a comprehensive guide on building a simple website that you can operate without entirely on your own. Follow along and in three simple steps, you will have your own FREE platform that no one can take from you, not even the Facebook banning police. I know we’ve all had our run in with those jerks. Here we go!

STEP ONE: Choosing a host website

There are many platforms that allow you to host your website with a custom domain name, which is what we’ll be using here so that you completely “own” your website. The host I think is the best and personally use is Tumblr.com. Tumblr is a blogging website that allows users to create their own blogs and seamlessly share content from millions of users all around the world. This both allows authors to find and interact with new and prospective fans while simultaneously keeping their blog or website fresh with new content. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume you already have an email address. If not, I highly recommend Gmail for all your emailing needs. Grab your email and navigate to http://www.tumblr.com and create an account. Account creation is extremely simple. Simply enter your email address, password and select a username. I suggest creating a username that in some way correlates to what you’re trying to accomplish.  AuthorJenineHadwick is perfectly fine as apposed to PrincessPonyGlitterBootyShorts. I’m serious, tumblr usernames get pretty rediculous. Now, open up a new tab and get ready for step two.

STEP TWO: Acquiring a domain name

Head over to http://www.dot.tk/. This is your domain provider. A domain provider, in a nutshell, is a computer network server where your website will be hosted 24 hours a day, seven days a week without disruption. Essentially, your personal computer, the one you’re using right now could act as a host for your website. With a few apps and minor HTML and coding knowledge, you really wouldn’t need a domain provider at all. Except for the fact that your computer isn’t turned on and connected to the internet all day every day and your internet connection probably wouldn’t have the strength to support all the people flocking to your website. Domain names usually range in price from $10 a month to over $100 a year for a .com domain. But, with the dot.tk website, you will be
provided with a .tk domain name completely free of charge. Yes, COMPLETELY free. The only catch is that you have to renew your domain name every year. But, for a free website, that doesn’t seem too daunting now does it? Head over to http://www.dot.tk and pick your domain name. Now, this will be the NAME of your website, the name through which users will find you. For example, my website is http://www.acgreenlee.com. I opted to pay for a .com domain name for personal reasons but, notice how simple the web address is. Your domain name could be anything from FamousAuthorHeather.tk to HankHillSellsPropane.tk. Just make sure it’s exactly what you want and something you won’t regret choosing later. After checking that your domain is available, proceed to the signup process.

Configuration:

1. Select Use DNS.
2. For the IP address slots, enter the IP from Tumblr (66.6.44.4) in both slots.
3. Select 12 Months from the drop down menu.
4. Enter the CAPTCHA.
5. Complete registration.

Head back over to tumblr:

1. Click Settings (the gear icon) at the top of your Dashboard.
2. Click the blog you’d like to update on the right side of the page.
3. Click the pencil to the right of the username section and enable “Use a custom domain.”
4. Enter your domain (e.g. mywebsite.tk).
5. Click “Test your domain.”
6. Correct problems if the test finds any, and click “Test your domain” until the test is successful.
7. Hit “Save.”

If you navigate to your username.tumblr.com blog and it tells you that theres a problem, don’t panic, this is a good thing! It means tumblr is pointing correctly to your domain name and all there’s left to do is wait until all the mechanical stuff updates iteslf. Now lets move onto step three, the fun part!

STEP THREE: Customization

The thing I love most about tumblr is how easily customized it is, even if you have no knowledge of coding. After you’ve beaten your website into shape and you have your AuthorsWebsite.tk website set up and tested, head back to tumblr and go Blog Settings and Edit Theme. You can choose from a million free (and paid if you’re about that life) themes to make your website look however you want. By uploading a header image and profile picture, most themes will give you an entirely personalized website at the push of a button. For even more personalization, hit Edit HTML in your blog editor and get ready for your first, simple HTML coding lesson. Head over to any free tumblr theme code site (we’re going with http://kawaiilayouts.com just because I love them) and copy one of their free theme codes. Head back over to the Edit HTML section of your tumblr editor, select the HTML that’s already there, hit paste, update preview and TADA. Completely new website with the click of a button.

With your new website you’ll be able to truly build an authors platform independent of any social media sites personal fate. And, in the case that something happens to tumblr, there are quite literally a million different alternatives to hosting, and your domain provider dot.tk even has its own page builder if you ever want to cut your ties to a host all together. You can have your cake and eat it to by using social media in conjuncture with your personal website, extending your reach and your influence exponentially. Make them work with each other and for each other! Now that you have the foundation laid out for you, what are you still doing here? Go! Go build a website!

Zodiac: Scorpios are very deep, intense people, there is always more than meets the eye. They present a cool, detached and unemotional air to the world, yet lying underneath is tremendous power, extreme strength, intense passion, a strong will and a persistent drive.

General information: The youngest son of the Guardian Realm’s prestigious Dresden family. He was exiled to Harlan Iowa after blacking out and going on a rampage that resulted in the murder of several mortals before their time was up. Since then, he has taken up communications at Viking Lake University to pass the time and has developed a deep relationship with the mortal woman Victoria Bouchard.

Personality Type: ENTJ – The Executive Assertive and outspoken – they are driven to lead. Excellent ability to understand difficult organizational problems and create solid solutions. Internal conflict: He’s constantly torn between wanting to do something great, and wanting to do absolutely nothing at all.

External conflict: He’s having a hard time balancing his love for Victoria with his fear of losing her.

Biggest fear: Losing someone close to him, most importantly, Victoria.

Bio: Being the youngest of fifteen, he’s spent his life being overlooked in favor of his powerful elder siblings, so naturally he’s learned not to ask for much. He’s lazy, and would much rather spend his time watching horror movies on Netflix and binge eating pizza than saving the world. He was exiled to the mortal realm as punishment and currently resides there, still ‘grounded’. At the end of the day, Kaizer just wants someplace–and someone–he can call his own, without fear of losing it to his family or the Guardian’s who rule his home world.

Put the Gun Down

August 15th 1967

The black, 1967 Fleetwood Cadillac pulled up to the curb like the Grim Reaper arriving late to a funeral; filled with acrid smoke that wafted from her red lips and the cigar dangling from her delicate fingertips. There was a time in her life when she wouldn’t have even bothered coming back for him, but after all the shit she’d gone through for that man, she’d be damned if she didn’t give him everything he deserved and more.

“Here’s fine Alicia. Leave the car running.” She exhaled, a plume of fragrant smoke leaving her lips in a ring, breaking against her sisters shoulder where she sat behind the steering wheel. She was dressed completely in black, her head covered by a dark silk scarf that partially concealed her face and large, opaque sunglasses. She called it her disguise. Her way of hiding herself in plain sight. And while she tried to hide, to remain anonymous, her elder sister opened the back door, stepping out onto the pavement dressed in the brightest red dress she could find. Her hair fell in a halo of golden pin curls around her pretty face, her heels clicking quietly against the concrete as she clenched her cigar between her teeth and moved towards O’Malleys, an Irish establishment her husband was known to frequent. A bar. A grill. And a cheap hotel all on the same lot. There was nothing old O’Malley didn’t offer his patrons and the exact same could be said for his wife. The place was usually empty during the day, making it a little surprising to find early drinkers already inhabiting the parking lot, all of them turning to stare, as if they knew instinctively to gather on this day. One that they would never forget.

They gawked and stared as she passed, undoubtedly unnerved by the glint of silver in her right hand. Though they all gasped or recoiled in shock, no one moved to stop her. As if they could. Her heels carried her up the short wooden stairs and into the hotel lobby, her footfall muted by the stained burgundy carpet as she cut a slow right down a long hall. With every step she took her life flashed before her eyes, her childhood, the day of her graduation, even her failure of a wedding day. But none of it felt more rewarding, more fulfilling than the memory she lived at that very moment. It wasn’t long until she reached room 108, his personal favorite, the sound of movement inside bringing a twisted smile to her face. Her Nolan wasn’t a very smart man, but then again, few of them could actually claim that title. He wouldn’t be the first to think he could get away with what he did, but he would certainly be the last. The unlucky sonofabitch. She lifted her left hand slowly to rap lightly on the door, uttering a muffled ‘Room service’ to its occupants. Mere seconds passed until the door swung open, revealing the startled face of a man caught in the act.

“Hello dear.” Her right hand shot into the air, stuffing the barrel of a .45 in that astonished, repentant mug of his. He lifted his hands into the air, his feet carrying him quickly backwards as she entered the room and kicked the door closed with her heel. There was a woman there, just as she’d assumed, naked and scrambling for her clothes as her mouth opened to let rip a scream. “Go ahead. Open that pretty little mouth of yours, if you dare. You’ll be sucking on a lot more than a cock when they drag your body out of here.” She warned and the woman sobbed, dropping her things as she headed for the bed, the direction in which her attacker motioned with the barrel of her gun.

“Adelaide! This isn’t what it looks like, sweetheart.” He sweated, seating himself shakily on the edge of the disheveled mattress. His blue eyes were wild with fear, darting around the room for a way to escape or better yet, something he could use to disable her.

“Of course it isn’t. This is just another business meeting, right?” Her thumb drew back the hammer, cocking her peacemaker as Nolan jumped and attempted to explain everything away, as if his words could ever make anything better.

“Honey, baby, please. We can talk about this.” He lifted his hands in placating gestures as his whore continued to cry, her painted face a wreck of an oil painting as mascara ran.

“Oh?” Adelaide asked, her arm swinging right as she pulled her trigger, recoiling as the lead sped through the woman’s skull, splattering blood, gray matter and skull fragments on the shoddy wallpaper behind her. Her body slowly slid off the bed, hitting the floor with a lifeless thump, “It’s  really a shame I didn’t come here to talk.”

“Adelaide put the gun down–!” His heroic shout ending in another gunshot, and then another, and another, and another as she left his chest cavity riddled with bullet holes. He oozed blood, the crimson liquid staining the bed and carpet, rolling across the floor to the toes of her shoes. She breathed a sigh of relief, flicking her burning cigar onto the bed where it singed a nice sized hole in the sheets before igniting the entire mattress. Satisfied, she turned and walked away.

He guys, long time no see! I’m back with a small tidbit set in the world I’m currently creating in and featuring its main characters. Enjoy!

Write about your characters going on a road trip.

“Over the river and through the woods, to grandmothers house we go…” Kaiser hummed only to be smacked with the end of Victoria’s blanket as she glared from him down at the tiny GPS device in her hands. She was wrapped up in the seat next to him, her face illuminated by the glow of the LCD screen as she searched for a way out of the endless maze of a forest he’d driven them into. They’d been running around in circles for hours now, miles away form civilization with less than half a tank of gas to get them home and their minor food supply–that had mostly consisted of diet coke, skittles and the odd Twinkie–already depleted. She was hungry, tired and grouchy and Kaiser’s constant harassment over her clothing was no help to her mood.

“Shut up. I don’t want anymore of your teasing. You’re the reason we got lost in the first place.” She grumbled from around the fat, two month old peppermint stick clutched between her teeth, her only defense against a stomach that demanded sustenance.

“I can’t help it you chose to wear red, or that I’m having dirty Little Red Riding Hood fantasies right now. How about you be Dirty Little Red and ride me on the hood?” He grinned, only to once again be reprimanded for his cheeky behavior with a smack in the head. They’d made plans to eat at a pleasant restaurant that took the form of a cabin high in the Colorado mountains, but only ended up getting lost and driving around for most of the day.  They’d stopped into a small town earlier in the evening, but the idiot Grim Reaper refused to ask for directions and only ended up getting them even more lost after they’d been run out of town. All she wanted to do now was make it back to their hotel so they could spend the last night of their vacation in peace. But with the car begging for gas and the blinking check engine light fading in and out of view, it didn’t look as if that would happen any time soon.

“Oh great, now what?” She asked as he pulled the car to the side of the small dirt road on which the travelled. The vehicle instantly began spitting smoke as it died, just inches away from the metal guard rail.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” He sighed, pushing open his door and going around to pop the hood. Victoria watched him wave smoke out of his face, poking around with the steaming hot inner workings of the car. Kaiser cursed and she frowned.

“What is it?”

“The damn radiator’s leaking. I think we may have hit something a while back and punctured it, the damn car is spilling all types of shit all over the place.” He growled, pulling a hose out of the cars innards and yelping as it scalded his palm.

“Can you fix it?” She asked and he scoffed.

“Why do women automatically assume that we’re mechanics just because we’re male? Woman, I don’t know shit about this car other than how to drive it. I can barely work the radio.” He griped and she huffed.

“Well don’t get pissy with me, I didn’t break the damn thing. You were driving, asshole!”

“Woman! Just sit there and let me handle this!” He bit back and she rolled her eyes, folding her arms over her chest as she turned her head to stare out the window. It was so dark, with nothing to illuminate the area around them save her little GPS, the burning headlights and the full moon above their heads. She watched darkness swirl between the trees as a light fog settled over the area. It would have been beautiful, had dread not settled into her stomach at that very moment. Victoria’s eyes narrowed on the shadows moving around them, an ominous feeling blanketing her in muted fear. Kaiser cursed again beneath the hood, his outburst causing her to jump as her nerves got the better of her. “Goddammit Kaiser, get it together.” He berated himself and she sighed, leaning back against her seat as she pulled the blanket tighter around her. She had no reason to be afraid. So long as Kaiser was around, nothing could hurt her. “I probably shouldn’t do this but, maybe it could help?” She listened to him whisper, seconds before the headlights went out and the radio went dead.

“Kai….what the fuck did you do?” She asked with a growl and he sighed.

“I think I killed the battery.” He answered sheepishly.

“You do realize that our cellphones aren’t charged, right?”

“…Yes.”

“You are also now aware that we can’t call for help, right?”

“…Yes.”

“You know I’m going to fucking kill you, don’t you?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Get in this car NOW!” She seethed, watching him hang his head, slam the hood down and amble around to his side of the car. He slid into the–thankfully–still warm interior and gave her a sheepishly apologetic glance.

“I’m sorry.” He pursed his lips, wincing at her glare. “I said I was sorry, dammit.”

“What are we going to do? We’re stuck here with no way home, no phones to call for help and it happens to be freezing outside. Sooner or later the heat in here is going to run out and we’re going to freeze to death.” She said and he grinned.

“I know one way I can keep us warm.” He said, only to be smacked again.

“Focus!”

Backstory: Eradeal is one of the oldest Archdemon’s in Lucifer’s employ. One of the angels who fell alongside the master demon, Lucifer has come to trust him and covet him like a brother. A big mistake on his part because Eradeal is always up to no good.
