Write Like a Pro! 7 Key Ways to be a HAPPIER Writer!

If you’re a writer who’s been a part of any online writing community for ANY length of time, you’ve probably stumbled across posts that you found just a tad bit disheartening. For example, posts with titles like: 450 REASONS WHY YOU’RE NOT BEING PUBLISHED or 900 WRITING RULES YOU SHOULDN’T BREAK. We have a hard enough time just finding time to write, now we have to worry about pleasing cynics, critics, and elitists alike? Searching online for quick answers to nagging questions bread by writing anxiety can be majorly stressful for even the most seasoned writer. So, while bloggers and writers from all over the world are telling you the “do’s and don’ts” of being a sucessful writer, here are SEVEN tips on how to be a HAPPIER writer. Let the other guys worry about the technical aspects and leave your mental health and well-being to me!

1: Daydreaming is Pre-Writing!

If you’re anything like me, you love to fantasize about your characters. In fact, it probably comes quite natural to you. When you were a kid way before you caught the writing bug, chances are you used to dream up all kinds of fantastical characters and play out scenes between them in your head. Or, maybe you were a fan of role-playing games like The Sims or Dungeons and Dragons. Regardless of how you got your fix of characters and storylines, you probably spent more than one night laying in bed losing sleep while your creations run amuck and your parents wondered why you were giggling to yourself. Just because your childhood is over and you have bills to pay doesn’t mean you can’t take a little “cat nap” and hash out that scene that’s been bothering you before actually sitting down to write.

Relax in a comfortable position, preferably not in bed unless you really do need to catch up on sleep, and close your eyes. Visualize the scene. Where are your characters? Are they in an urban setting? The middle of the wilderness? What do they look like? What do they feel like? Smell like? Sound like? Become so use to seeing your own characters walking and talking that every time you close your eyes for more than a few seconds it becomes the silver screen. After you have a pretty good foundation of where the scene is going, get up and write it!

2: Write While You’re Laying Down!

This one may be a little tricky if you’re as sleep deprived as the rest of the world. Pick up your laptop, iPad or generally anything with a keyboard, and get some typing done while you’re cozy in bed. If you can adjust the angle so you’re laying on your back or if you’re more comfortable laying on your stomach, prop your writing instrument up on a pillow and get to work. Laying prone will trick your brain into thinking you’re resting, easing the anxiety of sitting upright at a desk and forcing it to remember what words are and which preposition goes where. Just like accountants need chairs with lumbar support and athletes need special shoes, comfort is crucial to a writer’s success and their general happiness. Besides, your back will thank you for it later. Just don’t fall asleep!

3: Writing Challenges Don’t Have to be Challenging!

Not every trick in your writers toolbox has to be used for keeping your mind and skills sharp. Gather up a few friends and your favorite writing challenge and prompt and challenge each other to a friendly game or two! See who can spin a prompt into the weirdest flash fiction story in the shortest amount of time. Have a friend that writes erotica but you specialize in Sci-Fi? Swap genres! Have fun with your writing period and soon you’ll start to see that it’s less of a chore and more of something you can’t wait to do when you wake up in the morning.

4: Find Friends Who Love to Write!

I’ve been extremely lucky to stumble upon a plethora of online writing workshops and Facebook groups where I’ve met a ton of amazing authors, readers, designers and everyday people who’ve pulled me out of a writing funk on more than one occasion. Search your Twitter mentions, Facebook, online forums, Google+ and even Instagram tags for other writers to join and form a community with. Books are our children, and like raising them it often takes a village of support. Support being the keyword here. For starters, here are a few groups I’ve found to be particularly supportive and friendly.

And don’t forget to hit up your #amwriting tags on major social media networks. Those hardworking writers can be lifesavers!

5: The Ultimate Taboo – Put The Caffeine DOWN!

I know, I know, every writer has to have their cup of coffee and their chocolate if they’re going to make it through their 1AM mad dash to finish their manuscript. But coffee and especially caffeine isn’t always the best option when it comes to your writing or your mental well-being.

  • More than 4 cups of coffee linked to early death. A Mayo Clinic partnered study found that men who drank more than four 8 fl.oz. cups of coffee had a 21% increase in all-cause mortality. However, those that reported that they consumed excessive amounts of caffeine were also likely to smoke and have poor fitness.
  • Caffeine may cause insomnia. Caffeine in a person’s system at bedtime can mimic the symptoms of insomnia.
  • Increased risk of heart attacks among young adults. A study conducted by Dr. Lucio Mos found that young adults who were diagnosed with mild hypertension had 4 times the risk of having a heart attack if they consumed the amount of caffeine equivalent to 4 cups of coffee [Caffeine Informer]

Let’s face it, writing is an extremely sedentary job. Writers, in general, don’t tend to get out much. Ask yourself, do you absolutely need that last cup of coffee? Or do you really need to just go to sleep, count your losses, and start fresh in the morning? Physical health and mental health are closely tied. I’m not saying you need to go get a gym membership, but small lifestyle changes could go a long way.

6: Whose Face is it Anyway? Why You Need Fan Casting in Your Life!

As a writer, finding “face claims” for my characters has become my favorite pastime. When I’m not writing I’m often crawling through Google Images and Pinterest looking for pictures of my favorite actors, musicians and models who best resemble certain characters. And when I’m not doing that, I’m ogling said models and daydreaming about my characters actually doing what I tell them for once and actually getting their book finished. Even better, if you have had the opportunity to build a community of fans or followers, why not leave the task up to them? Ask them to find the perfect actors to fill your imaginary cast and reward them when they do. Maybe give them a shoutout on your Facebook page? If they created an image with their fan-cast, share it around the web! There’s nothing more fun than seeing your brain babies through the eyes of others!

7: Put the Pencil DOWN!

That’s right. Put the pencil down. Don’t write anything at all, not even a grocery list. And I don’t mean that in a permanent sense. Everyone needs a break now and again, heck, billionaire CEO’s take vacations every other week and no one bats an eyelash. Writing is a job, whether it pays well or not, and just like with any other job your lack of progress may just mean you need a little time away. Don’t feel bad about stepping away from your writing for a few weeks. Just remember to always come back! Your characters miss you!

If all else fails in your search for the writer-happies, why not just sit back and read? You can find my latest Novelette Blood Fantasy as well as others at most major retailers and on Amazon.

An Alien Contract Killer with a Dark Past finds his Mate in a Plus Sized Psychiatrist with a Good Heart

Blood Fantasy is a Science Fiction inspired novelette from award-winning author A.C. Greenlee that advanced readers are calling …mesmerizing…

Beautiful Aliens Inhabit the Earth…

After mass immigration from a world destroyed by war, Alien’s from Planet Rift find themselves assimilating into societies across the globe in the year 2057. Tall, ethereal and relatively peaceful, they are a welcomed sight after human born catastrophes that left most major human cities leveled by nuclear fallout. Though the Riftkin are just what the Earthlings need to show the rest of the universe that they’re civilized and capable of something more than hate, their blood-drinking ways quickly become a problem.

A Doctor Who Can Keep Us Safe?

Dr. Ava Khan, a dusky-skinned, world-renowned Psychiatrist from Dubai, creates a program meant to wean the Aliens off plasma through psychology. But for every new rule and law she helps put into place, the Riftkin fall further into poverty. Driven into action by starvation and deportation, underground blood dens and terrorist organizations spring up like weeds. Only, little do they know, the old Order of planet Rift has sent the doctor a secret protector in the form of Adrihel, famed military fighter and celestial being. He takes the name Dimitri Freysson and enters her program freely, not expecting a brown-eyed temptress with curves he’d die to get his hands on.

Doctor Ava Khan: Kidnapped by Terrorists!

In an attempt at world domination, a terrorist group takes Ava and Dimitri hostage. While she continues to deny the passion she feels at his touch, Dr. Khan will have to face the sins of her actions and will be held accountable for each life she inadvertently took. In a whirlwind of lies, discoveries and unrequited love, it’s only a matter of time before the world she helped build comes crumbling down on top of her. And in an amazing twist of fate, when her protector is given the chance to take vengeance for his people by ending her life, a bond she never knew she had is shattered right before her very eyes.

From International Best-Selling author A.C. Greenlee…

In a story about love and acceptance, two people from totally different worlds find peace in each others arms…

Fresh out of college, when Claire Lanh moved from California to Chesterfield Pennsylvania to fill the position of Professor at the prestigious St. Lucia University, she’d expected a fairytale ending in an Ivy League setting. What she wasn’t counting on was falling in love with her gorgeous Philosophy student, and resident psychic, Daniel Kang.

Just twenty-three, Daniel is the son of a wealthy Korean conglomerate, currently on the run from a mysterious team of government scientists who want to claim his unusual powers for their own. After his elder brother goes missing, he is whisked away to The United States where he is hid in the quiet town of Chesterfield. He lives his life in relative peace, until an easily flustered, plus-sized, Blasian takes over his least favorite course.

No matter what she does, she can’t get Daniel to pay attention in her class and his troublemaking ways are making her already difficult job all that more treacherous. And once he volunteers to help her with her work after school, a whole new can of worms is opened. With her career on the line and his life in danger at every turn, can they learn to coexist? Can Claire resist the charms of the man that literally everyone wants and will stop at nothing to have her? Or will a single bad grade destroy them both?

You won’t believe how simple and FREE creating an authors website can be!

WebsiteBlogPostimage

In the past, an author’s personal website was the holy grail of finding information on our most beloved writers and storytellers. From book tours to correct reading order, to a mailing address where you could send fanatical letters and wail about the death of your favorite characters. Like a brick house we built with our bare hands, they were our personal spaces, our platforms through which we reached our readers. But, with the rise of blogging and social media, the authors website is slowly fading into antiquity. Or is it? Times are constantly changing and with it comes a flux of new technology and social platforms that overwrite the old. If you’re a millennial like me you no doubt witnessed the death of MySpace and the rise of Facebook and Twitter. But, who’s to say that in ten years these popular sites will still be around? Having a Facebook “like” page and a booming twitter account are fine, but in the case that Facebook nosedives at any time in the future, having your own platform that’s controlled solely by you may be your only saving grace. I can already hear you screaming at me, “But websites are expensive! I can’t afford that!” and “I don’t know how to code a website! I can’t be in control of something I know nothing about!” Relax friends and colleagues, I’m here to provide a comprehensive guide on building a simple website that you can operate without entirely on your own. Follow along and in three simple steps, you will have your own FREE platform that no one can take from you, not even the Facebook banning police. I know we’ve all had our run in with those jerks. Here we go!

STEP ONE: Choosing a host website

A.C. GreenleeThere are many platforms that allow you to host your website with a custom domain name, which is what we’ll be using here so that you completely “own” your website. The host I think is the best and personally use is Tumblr.com. Tumblr is a blogging website that allows users to create their own blogs and seamlessly share content from millions of users all around the world. This both allows authors to find and interact with new and prospective fans while simultaneously keeping their blog or website fresh with new content. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume you already have an email address. If not, I highly recommend Gmail for all your emailing needs. Grab your email and navigate to http://www.tumblr.com and create an account. Account creation is extremely simple. Simply enter your email address, password and select a username. I suggest creating a username that in some way correlates to what you’re trying to accomplish.  AuthorJenineHadwick is perfectly fine as apposed to PrincessPonyGlitterBootyShorts. I’m serious, tumblr usernames get pretty rediculous. Now, open up a new tab and get ready for step two.

STEP TWO: Acquiring a domain name

Head over to http://www.dot.tk/. This is your domain provider.A.C. Greenlee Website Creation Guide A domain provider, in a nutshell, is a computer network server where your website will be hosted 24 hours a day, seven days a week without disruption. Essentially, your personal computer, the one you’re using right now could act as a host for your website. With a few apps and minor HTML and coding knowledge, you really wouldn’t need a domain provider at all. Except for the fact that your computer isn’t turned on and connected to tA.C. Greenlee Website Guidehe internet all day every day and your internet connection probably wouldn’t have the strength to support all the people flocking to your website. Domain names usually range in price from $10 a month to over $100 a year for a .com domain. But, with the dot.tk website, you will be
provided with a .tk domain name completely free of charge. Yes, COMPLETELY free. The only catch is that you have to renew your domain name every year. But, for a free website, that doesn’t seem too daunting now does it? Head over to http://www.dot.tk and pick your domain name. Now, this will be the NAME of your website, the name through which users will find you. For example, my website is http://www.acgreenlee.com. I opted to pay for a .com domain name for personal reasons but, notice how simple the web address is. Your domain name could be anything from FamousAuthorHeather.tk to HankHillSellsPropane.tk. Just make sure it’s exactly what you want and something you won’t regret choosing later. After checking that your domain is available, proceed to the signup process.

Configuration:

  1. Select Use DNS.
  2. For the IP address slots, enter the IP from Tumblr (66.6.44.4) in both slots.
  3. Select 12 Months from the drop down menu.
  4. Enter the CAPTCHA.
  5. Complete registration.

Head back over to tumblr:

  1. Click Settings (the gear icon) at the top of your Dashboard.
  2. Click the blog you’d like to update on the right side of the page.
  3. Click the pencil to the right of the username section and enable “Use a custom domain.”
  4. Enter your domain (e.g. mywebsite.tk).
  5. Click “Test your domain.”
  6. Correct problems if the test finds any, and click “Test your domain” until the test is successful.
  7. Hit “Save.”

If you navigate to your username.tumblr.com blog and it tells you that theres a problem, don’t panic, this is a good thing! It means tumblr is pointing correctly to your domain name and all there’s left to do is wait until all the mechanical stuff updates iteslf. Now lets move onto step three, the fun part!

STEP THREE: Customization

The thing I love most about tumblr is how easily customized it is, even if you have no knowledge of coding. After you’ve beaten your website into shape and you have your AuthorsWebsite.tk website set up and tested, head back to tumblr and go Blog Settings and Edit Theme. You can choose from a million free (and paid if you’re about that life) themes to make your websiteScreen Shot 2015-08-28 at 11.04.09 PM look however you want. By uploading a header image and profile picture, most themes will give you an entirely personalized website at the push of a button. For even more personalization, hit Edit HTML in your blog editor and get ready for your first, simple HTML coding lesson. Head over to any free tumblr theme code site (we’re going with http://kawaiilayouts.com just because I love them) and copy one of their free theme codes. Head back over to the Edit HTML section of your tumblr editor, select the HTML that’s already there, hit paste, update preview and TADA. Completely new website with the click of a button.

With your new website you’ll be able to truly build an authors platform independent of any social media sites personal fate. And, in the case that something happens to tumblr, there are quite literally a million different alternatives to hosting, and your domain provider dot.tk even has its own page builder if you ever want to cut your ties to a host all together. You can have your cake and eat it to by using social media in conjuncture with your personal website, extending your reach and your influence exponentially. Make them work with each other and for each other! Now that you have the foundation laid out for you, what are you still doing here? Go! Go build a website!

Leos are always trying to make things right in the world, they have larger then life emotions and they need to feel like they have accomplished something at the end of the day. They react to situations with action instead of sitting back and thinking about it, they are not impulsive however because they look at the future and consider consequences of their actions.

General information: Prominent First General of Führer Ezra Dresden and son of Colonel Augustus Mariselle, a war hero who served alongside Baal Dresden in the first, third and fourth Great Demon Wars.

Personality type: ENTP – The Visionary – Creative, resourceful, and intellectually quick. Good at a broad range of things. Enjoy debating issues, and may be into “one-up-manship”. They get very excited about new ideas and projects, but may neglect the more routine aspects of life. Generally outspoken and assertive. They enjoy people and are stimulating company. Excellent ability to understand concepts and apply logic to find solutions.

Hero Archetype(s):

  • The SWASHBUCKLER: Mr. Excitement, he’s an adventure. This guy is action, action, and more action. He’s physical and daring. Fearless, he’s a daredevil, or an explorer. He needs thrills and chills to keep him happy.
  • The BAD BOY: dangerous to know, he walks on the wild side. This is the rebel, or the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s bitter and volatile, a crushed idealist, but he’s also charismatic and street smart.

Best strength: Executing complicated plans, following orders, taking care of tough decision making, reliable. He has a strict preference for duty and policy over ethics and will always see things done, even if they aren’t the right thing.

Worst flaws:

  • Berserker – The Berserker is a character who throws himself into a fight with such reckless abandon, it seems like he WANTS to die. It could be over-enthusiasm, overconfidence,Unstoppable Rage, or the desire to die in battle. Whatever the cause, it’s usually accompanied by a bellowing warcry Sometimes with total obliviousness to whether he’s actually fighting the enemy. And he never, ever retreats.
  • Deadpan SnarkerProne to sarcastic and cynical remarks.
  • Entitled to Have You – Believes that he is entitled to the affections of his love interest simply for existing.
  • Fearless Fool – Not scared of anything even if it is dangerous.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Making them angry is suicidal.

Ego flaw:

  • Hair-Trigger Temper – This character will get extremely angry for many particular provocations — or has never learned how to control his temper.

Ambitions: Serving the Führer until there is no one left to serve. Be it Ezra or another, he’s tied to the position by a strong sense of honor and duty that later transfers to Ezra himself, in whom he finds a friend/brother.

Motive: Duty, Honor, Fulfilling the destiny of his father.

Internal conflict: None. He’s the most mentally fucked up yet harmonious character I’ve ever met.

External conflict: Kaizer, Mischa, Ezra–Basically everyone who apposes his way of thinking.

Biggest fear: Dying in battle as his father did. Though this fear isn’t nearly enough to keep him off the battlefield, it just makes him work harder.

Meet other characters here:

Axel Mariselle- Soo Hyuk Lee

Genesis: Second Excerpt!

It had been over three years since he’d last laid eyes on the man who’d thrown him out of his home and Kaizer would be lying if he said he wasn’t still holding a bit of a grudge. He knew he’d have to return sooner or later to sort things out with the asshole, he just didn’t think he’d have Victoria in tow. What if something happened to her? What if Ezra took out his frustrations on her instead of him? He didn’t have the power to fight off one brother, let alone his entire guard, especially his first general, if he was forced to defend himself. He stared down at her, his body tensing as doubt and uncertainty flooded him. Was he making the right decision? Or should he be headed in the other direction, running for her life as well as his own? The thought of losing her kept him rooted in place, unable to move for the fear of never laying eyes on her again. Kaizer watched a door open down the hall as Zain stepped out to greet them, his all knowing eyes reading his posture and knowing instantly that he was thinking of bolting. “Zain’s waiting for us, Kai.” She smiled up at him, completely oblivious to the dangers they were about to face. He couldn’t help but sigh as he placed a hand at the small of her back, keeping constant contact as he pushed them forward.

“I guess it’s too late to run now.” He muttered, watching Zain nod knowingly as they approached. He didn’t speak as he stood aside and allowed them to pass into the confines of Ezra’s personal sanctuary. He remembered that office clearly from his childhood, having been sent there for punishment at least twice a week until he graduated high school. It once belonged to their father and just entering it again made him feel like a sniveling child, begging for forgiveness for whatever petty crime he’d committed. It almost felt like stepping into a principals office, knowing you were either going to be suspended or beaten with a yard stick longer than you were tall. It was decorated in rich woods and earthy tones that were aesthetically pleasing to the eye, welcoming and warm, a place you never would have expected to be a military briefing room. He stared over at the antique claw-foot, wooden writing desk, polished to perfection and reflecting the grim image of the man who sat behind it, a golden pen in hand moving smoothly across parchment as he signed orders to move his armies around the world. Ezra Dresden was a man to be feared, not only because of his power or the soldiery he commanded, but for is intelligence and dedication to completing any task he set his mind to. A formidable foe, he was not the type of person you wanted standing beside your enemies on the battlefield, and although at that moment he could have launched himself across the room and strangled him for his expulsion, he couldn’t help but be proud that such a person was his own flesh and blood.

Kaizer watched him lift his head, as if he’d only just noticed them entering the room, his dark eyes going from Zain’s calm form to Kai who moved to stand protectively in front of Victoria. Those eyes of his flashed as he shuffled the documents he’d been working on and set them aside. Rising gracefully from his high-backed, antique chair, he moved to stand in front of his desk, leaning casually against it as he slipped his hands into the pockets of his expensive cotton slacks.

“Before we begin,” He spoke, his deep voice erupting from his chest in the form of a thunderous growl, “I just want to remind you that were we not in the presence of a young woman, I would be slamming your head against the floor for your ignorant, ill-advised, behavior.” His eyes briefly burned a brilliant amethyst before returning to their natural jet black.
